The Soldier's Tale

‘The Soldier’s Tale’ is a classic story of a soldier returning home on leave from war.
On his way, he encounters the devil at a crossroads. The devil promises the soldier all that his heart could desire - in exchange for his battered old fiddle.

Only later does the soldier discover the real and terrible cost of the exchange.

Originally created at the end of World War I,
with music by composed by Igor Stravinsky and a text by C.F. Ramuz, this is a tale with clear resonance for us all - as we again find ourselves living through difficult times.

The work defies easy description -
it's not just a play...

there is a live seven piece orchestra -
but it's definitely not a musical or opera...
It features movement and dance,
but it's not a ballet or a dance piece...

PERFORMANCE TIME IS APPROX. 60 minutes

Tour

Following our first performance, we are currently organising a tour of the production coupled with an accompanying workshop. We are offering the performance and workshop free to high schools and community organisations in Blackburn with Darwen as well as the surrounding Lancashire and Greater Manchester authorities.

The workshop is designed for up to 30 young people, aged 12-18. Participants will be given the opportunity to explore themes from The Soldier’s Tale - including conflict and displacement, isolation, material gain, moral conscience - as well as those things in life that make us truly happy! The workshop will be led by actors from the production and supported by our pianist and creative team. Participants will be encouraged to develop techniques and skills in drama, movement and music in order to produce their own creative response to the themes. The three-hour workshop can be tailored to the needs of your group. The workshop could be a first introduction to the performing arts for your participants; equally, we are happy to work with groups of experienced performers.

The tour offer includes a performance of the Soldier’s Tale - with a run time of one hour, a cast of 8 and an orchestra of 7 musicians. We will be performing on the flat - so the production can be staged in any suitable space - such as a Hall, Gym, Auditorium, or an interesting alternative! Audience size is dependent on your available space, and we encourage a broad and inclusive audience composition! We welcome the opportunity to work alongside your school or organisation to build a wider audience for the performance - beyond workshop participants and their families, through your school/organisation and the wider community. Even though the workshop is intended for young people, the production is suitable for all.

Exact tour dates are to be confirmed - based on funding cycles - but are expected to run late in the academic year. Workshop/performance days for schools will be on Mondays and Fridays, while community organisations can also be accommodated on weekends. We will work with you to find the best date for your calendar.
